Constitution Amendments

This year there are five proposed constitution amendments. They are listed below and can be voted on alongside the candidate elections.

a) Update the constitution to reflect the fact that SU no longer allows individuals to hold multiple roles. (i.e. remove inclusions officer doubling up)
b) Update the constitution to reflect the new role names and role descriptions for society President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Inclusions Officer.
c) Add the role of Vice President, role description to match that of the President
d) Add the role of Technical Officer, with role description: “Responsible for administrating CompSoc’s Game and Web Server and ensuring information security”
e) Add the role of Sports Officer, with role description:
“Responsible for organising Campus Leagues and Training where a demand for it lies within the society”

Committee Member Elections

We’ll also elect a new committee to serve next year. Please read the candidate descriptions below and cast your vote using the Google Form.

Each candidate is listed below in the order that they will appear on the ballot and will speak during the AGM.

President

Ben Ridings

I would like to be the of president of CompSoc because of my willingness to help the society. My communication and leadership skills are very strong and I can apply these to the role of president to propel the society. I am good at engaging with people and I can use this to engage with the society members. Finally, I have very good organisation skills and I enjoy helping the society by coming up with creative ideas for events and I act responsible for my role in the event planning and I am a very committed person.

– Ben Ridings

Vice President (new role, subject to constitution amendment)

Felix Randle

“I joined committee partway through the year as a Second Year Representative. Throughout the year my role has evolved to do a little bit of everything, I have organised events, run game servers and pulled together a football team for Campus Leagues.

This year I want to help the society further, doing a little bit of everything that’s needed of me to help the society grow and flourish as we exit COVID Restrictions.

I will also be doing everything in my power to ensure we host a ShefJam at some point in 2021.”

– Felix Randle

Finance & Development Officer (formerly Treasurer)

Jameel Chagpar

I would love to make new friends, at the same time do do something meaningful. In addition ,being a Muslim, I am really passionate about showing everyone out there that we are not the horrible people the media portrays us as, and I feel this role would be a good place to start. Apart from that, I am obsessed with keeping things in order and so the Treasurer seemed the best role for me :).

– Jameel Chagpar

Operations Officer (formerly Secretary)

Charlie Turner

Being a part of the CompSoc committee this year has given me a chance to engage with the society in a way I’ve found really fun and rewarding. I’d love the opportunity to get more involved in making sure the society keeps running smoothly, especially as we begin the transition back to more ‘normal’ times and there’s a risk of disorganisation.

– Charlie Turner

Inclusions Officer (now fully distinct from other roles)

Alex Cooper

I’m interested in this role because I want to ensure that comp soc remains as available for every student once lockdown is behind us as it was for me when I first arrived at the uni.

I have been performing the role already for the last year and wish to continue, so I can help as many of the incoming 1st years as possible as well as being able to be there for the future 2nd years as they too haven’t been able to experience compsoc activities outside of lockdown.

– Alex Cooper

Robert Pultea

According to all known laws of aviation, there is no way a beeshould be able to fly. Its wings are too small to get its fat little body off the ground.
The bee, of course, flies anyway.

Hey, I’m Robert I’m a bubbly guy that loves to do stuff, the more stupid the better. I’m interested in becoming an inclusion officer because I love meeting new people, as I love learning stuff. It’s enjoyable to meet people halfway and get a new perspective about things.

If I will be elected as inclusion officer I would try to make compsoc an enjoyable place for everyone regarding of any social-political affiliations.

And most importantly, I use arch btw.

Robert Pultea

Publicity Officer

Two candidates (inc. one backup choice)

Anna Penny

This year I was the Technical Event’s Coordinator for CompSoc so I already have experience with working within a team, especially in the CompSoc committee. I feel I have new ideas I could bring to the table in this role. For example a Miro only fans 😉 no but really, for example a biweekly newsletter with eye catching graphics to help keep our emails from going amiss, doing regular weekly or biweekly posts on social media so that students can see upcoming events for the week, and much more. I look forward to being an active member of the society and hopefully committee once again.

– Anna Penny

Sophie Dillon (backup choice)

I’m Sophie and I’ve been on the Compsoc committee for a year now as an Events Coordinator and would love the chance to continue being on the committee during my placement year. I’m a chatty, friendly and approachable person; I regularly volunteer for committees within the Computer Science department already. For instance, I’m a member of the Computer Science department’s Equality, Diversity and Inclusions committee, was a former member of the Academic Representatives during my first year of university and was also a Sheffield Mentor. Volunteering my time has allowed me to improve upon my skills of public speaking, communication/negotiation and leadership. I’ll be able to use these skills to communicate effectively with my year group regarding Compsoc events and also be able to liaise feedback regarding Compsoc to the committee from my year group. I’ve also attended training sessions for Sheffield Mentors and my time as an events coordinator. I’d be able to use my experience as Events Coordinator to make relevant contributions to next year’s committee and to also help out when needed within the committee.

– Sophie Dillon

General Committee Members (aka year reps, up to three per year group)

Second Year
(two candidates, inc. one backup choice)

Zac Jones

I believe next year’s CompSoc is in need of strong new committee members to help regain the interest of current first years. I think that given my past experiences managing online events and learning from this year I can contribute a lot if elected to this position

(six candidates, inc. two backup choices)

Luke Jones

My name is Luke and I’m interested in being a general committee member for CompSoc. I want to use my previous volunteering experience to help evolve the society. I used to volunteer for the cadets which involved organising and conducting events. I was trusted with many responsibilities like helping younger cadets improve, attend training sessions for leadership/public speaking and assisting other roles in carrying out their tasks. I volunteered here for over 4 years; the skills I’ve gained here will help me to contribute actively to CompSoc by being a good team member and voicing my thoughts, as well as my year group’s. I would love to be a positive influence upon the society and further develop my confidence and public speaking skills while being apart of the society.

– Luke Jones

Jacob Cummins

CompSoc is a huge asset for all Computer Science students providing both career/academic support and social experiences which without the Department of Computer Science (and the university as a whole) would be lacking key parts of a fun, useful and inclusive university experience.
I would be honoured to support the society any way I can and to help guide it to its full potential.
